Das Schicksal meint es mit Brenda (Queen Latifah) nicht gut. Erst verstirbt ihr Partner und lässt sie als trauernde Witwe zurück und zu allem Übel verliert sie auch noch ihren Job. Gute Gründe, in ihrem alten Leben zu bleiben, hat Brenda keineswegs. Weil sie nichts mehr zu verlieren hat, schnappt sie sich ihre Familie und reist mit ihr quer durch das Land, um einen neuen Ort zu finden, der eine bessere Zukunft für sie bereithält. Als sie in der Wüste von New Mexico stranden und keine Hilfe in Sicht ist, muss Brenda erneut dem unerbittlichen Schicksal ins Gesicht blicken. Allerdings verschlimmert sich die unbequeme Situation zusätzlich, als ein mysteriöser Killer seine Jagd auf die Hilflose beginnt. Doch der Psychopath hat nicht mit der Wut und dem Überlebenswillen von Brenda gerechnet, die sich zur Wehr setzt.
